An update since the first post. Here are two phones messaging each other on the current build:
What the relay itself sees during that test: no names, no readable content, and held messages deleted the moment they’re collected.
Where things stand
- The native iPhone and Android apps are in beta testing among the team. Those are the products. The web build is still there to find bugs.
- Messages are end to end encrypted with MLS and never go on chain.
- Identity is a zero-knowledge registration on Midnight, still on Preprod. Signup needs NO phone number, email, wallet or tokens, because a sponsor pays the DUST fee.
- A username only goes live once the owner’s identity is confirmed on chain.
- Relays only ever see encrypted traffic. No message content, no usernames, nothing that names who is talking to whom.
- Last time we said the relay had no authentication. It does now: every connection signs a one-time challenge, and the room id itself decides who may enter, with no accounts on the relay.
- The timing trade-off from the first post still stands. A relay can see when traffic moves, just not what it is.
Next
We are setting up relays run by independent operators, so the network does not depend on us alone. Closed beta testing opens soon.
